The word “journey” gets tossed around a lot in the world of dance music. When I wrote Voken Rai, I took that concept as literally as possible. Starting with an arpeggiated strobe like melody, I placed my fingers on the Moog Sub37 and introduced the pulsating bassline in to the soundscape. The song quickly became more of a performance rather than something programmed. As the bassline opens up during the intro, atmospheric elements help to lift the song to a crescendo of harmony and awakened senses. The earth-like kick drum eases its way in to the mix, commanding attention and teasing what’s to come. I wanted the drums and other percussive elements to be prominent yet mystical, serving a purpose to help drive the experience along. I performed the top line melody again on the Sub37, with splashes of reverb helping to push things in to a deep meditative atmosphere. As the song breaks free for a moment, a tease of the final stage to come appears before quickly washing away in to a wall of sound. At this point even I was hypnotized by what was happening. As an artist you sometimes reach a point with your creation where it feels as though it’s become a living thing all on its own. The final passage of the song incorporates a playful and commanding percussive melody which evolves back in to a wash of coloured atmosphere. The initial melody appears again and returns us to a familiar place, easing us softly back to the present moment.

Something truly magical happened for me with this song, I remember every moment when I was writing it. It was more than a flow-state; it was a translation of the divine creative energy coming out of me in to a pure sonic form.
